UPDATE: August 20, 2020
“In a new study, published August 5, 2020 in Cell Stem Cell , researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine report successfully implanting highly specialized grafts of neural stem cells directly into spinal cord injuries in mice, then documenting how the grafts grew and filled the injury sites, integrating with and mimicking the animals’ existing neuronal network.” Read more on the UCSD website.

Spinal cord injury research is always evolving, and news from UC San Diego gives even more hope to people with spinal cord injuries.

UCSD scientists say they have discovered a way to enable nerve fibers to grow AFTER a severe spinal cord injury has occurred. Their study was conducted on rats. Scientists used stem cells – in the form of a gel application – to rewire the rats’ central nervous systems, allowing them to grow new nerve cells and to regain some movement in the areas below their spinal cord injuries.

Another possible San Diego knockout attack has police on high alert. This, after a Ocean Beach man came forward this week claiming he was possibly the victim of the ‘knockout’ game on Valentine’s Day night.

In November, local news stations reported on two possible knockout attacks in the Gaslamp Quarter. The Valentine’s Day attack allegedly happened near Sunset Cliffs. In an anonymous letter sent to OBRag.org, a person calling himself a fourth-generation Ocean Beach resident said he climbed the stairs near a seawall and walked up Pescadero Avenue when he was suddenly sucker-punched several times in the face. The victim said two attackers included one man in a gold party mask and another possibly in a silver mask. They were also wearing jeans and white hoodies.

San Diego Knockout Attacks

San Diego police are investigating so called “knockout attacks” in which people on the street randomly punch strangers. They’ve been happening across the country… and now, allegedly here in the San Diego area.

Victoria Hyatt tells 10News her husband was the latest victim of an unprovoked attack near the Gaslamp Quarter at Second Avenue and Ash Street.

“They weren’t talking to each other,” she said. “They were just standing next to each other and then out of the blue, the light changed for him to walk across the crosswalk and he just … bam, hit him as hard as he could.”

She says man simply walked away after the sucker punch while her husband stumbled back to his office to report his assault to police.

As one of the leading group of San Diego personal injury lawyers, we understand the importance of summertime safety. With more than 10-million residential swimming pools across the country, and another 310,000 public pools – swimming pool accidents are inevitable. Unfortunately, some can be fatal. Every day, roughly ten people die from unintentional drowning. Of these, two are children under the age of 15. In fact, officials say drowning ranks 5th among the leading causes of unintentional injury death in the nation.

While swimming is great for exercise and a wonderfully refreshing summer activity, adults need to be mindful when children are around. For infants and toddlers, an adult should be in the water and within arm’s reach, providing “touch supervision.” For older children, an adult should be paying constant attention and free from distractions. The supervising adult must know how to swim.

San Diego Concussion Testing and Clinics

Concussions are a very serious personal injury, especially for children involved in afternoon sports.

As local San Diego area high schools and colleges become more aware of concussions in children, some sporting programs are now requiring concussion baseline testing.

Concussion baseline testing happens in the pre-season and is conducted by trained San Diego area health care professionals. The tests are used to assess a child’s balance and brain function – including learning and memory skills, ability to pay attention or concentrate, and how quickly he or she thinks and solve problems. Baseline concussion tests also check for the presence of any concussion symptoms. Results from baseline tests can be used and compared to a similar exam conducted when an accident has resulted in a suspected concussion.

Since San Diego Food Poisoning investigations and failed restaurant health inspections are so common, San Diego county has moved forward with a new ordinance mandating that all San Diego food trucks be required to post inspection letter grades.

County officials say they inspect more than a thousand mobile food operations, but until now operators were not required to display the results.  Under the new ordinance, the food trucks will get decals instead of cards so the grades can’t be transferred among trucks.

Supervisor Ron Roberts tells 10News, “I want to ensure people here — whether they’re going to a restaurant in the conventional sense or a mobile food truck — that they can do that with confidence and know that those facilities have been inspected and certified.”

Nursing home neglect is a tragic occurrence that impacts some San Diego nursing homes and facilities, and many more across the country. People who can no longer live on their own depend on nursing homes to provide them with comfort, care, and peace of mind. Unfortunately though, some nursing homes and assisted living facilities fail to live up to their obligation to patients. Abuse and/or neglect may set in at the hands of caregivers.  That’s why it is so important for family members to keep a watchful eye on any signs of nursing home neglect or abuse.

When a nursing home has assumed the responsibility of providing care to a vulnerable senior and the nursing home fails to do so, then the senior could suffer a number of very serious health consequences. The senior also may be reluctant or physically unable to speak out about the abuse. Some seniors simply don’t want to appear as if they are “making trouble.” When they do this, however, the abuse and neglect becomes a re-occurring problem. As such, it is especially important for visiting family members to be on the lookout for signs of trouble.

Beware of Aggressive Holiday Shoppers

San Diego Attorney Personal InjuryWe’ve all seen them on TV… those eager holiday shoppers, pushing and shoving their way into stores to take advantage of deep discounts.  We can’t blame them for wanting to save a little money, but their aggressiveness certainly poses a hazard.

For example, 0n Thanksgiving night, a woman at a Los Angeles Walmart used pepper spray to deter other shoppers from eyeing up the items she wanted, injuring nearly 20 people. In Texas, two shoppers got into a physical fight over who was first in line. One of the men pulled a gun. The crowd started to panic and chaos ensued. Several injuries were reported.
