Pedestrian Accident in El Cajon

Visibility may be to blame.

A fatal pedestrian accident claimed the life of a man in El Cajon Thursday evening.

Officials say, residents along Dehesa Road west of Sycuan Casino called 911 around 7:20 p.m. after they heard a woman screaming in the road. An elderly woman driving a 1995 Honda Civic collided with a 43-year-old El Cajon man who was allegedly walking in the roadway at the time. The force of the crash shattered both car windows and crumpled part of the roof of the Honda. The elderly couple in the Honda received bruises to their hands and face.

A fatal hit and run accident claimed the life of a San Diego college student Wednesday night.

It happened in Carlsbad, at the intersections of Palomar Airport Road and Carlsbad Boulevard.

Police say the driver, a 17 year old girl, was allegedly drunk when she struck and killed  20-year-old Vinnie Zellefrow. The teenage driver fled the scene, but was found a mile south in a parking lot. She was driving a silver Chrysler Sedan and was arrested on accounts of vehicular man slaughter, felony hit and run, and felony drunk driving.

The family of a 4-year-old girl has filed suit against a San Diego Gas & Electric truck driver claiming that he was driving while talking on a cellular phone when she was hit.

Jaslene Arias was crossing in a crosswalk on Cottonwood Street with another girl and her mother, Ana Herrera Rodriguez, when they were struck on January 22nd. The mother, 39, was killed and both girls were severely injured.

The family is asking for damages to be determined at trial.

In light of a new study about the rise in deadly truck accidents comes news of a fatal San Diego hit and run pedestrian accident involving a box truck.

Police say 23-year-old Benjamin Ramirez of Escondido was walking  along Bear Valley Parkway on his way home from work Monday, when he was struck and killed by the truck. The “U-Haul” style box truck allegedly slowed, but did not stop for Ramirez.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department has launched an internal investigation following a pedestrian accident involving a deputy and a woman on a mobility scooter.

According to officials, Deputy Khristina Gimeno was driving the patrol car last Friday morning when it struck the scooter in an Encanto crosswalk. A nearby surveillance camera reportedly captured the accident.

The woman on the scooter was injured and complained of hip and neck pain. Officials believe she has just finished grocery shopping at a nearby store just before the accident.

Fatal Pedestrian Accident Shuts Down I-5

A deadly pedestrian accident shut down a portion of Interstate 5 near the Coronado Bridge last night. Police say the pedestrian was struck by at least three cars while reportedly trying to run across the freeway around 7:30pm.

The interstate was shutdown for several hours while investigators worked the scene. Police have not yet confirmed whether the victim was a man or a woman. One of the driver involved in the accident was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Unfortunately San Diego pedestrian accidents like last night’s incident are all too common in this region. Pedestrian accidents can happen on any road and at any time of day and night.

On the heels of deadly San Diego car accident that took the lives of two people, including a former Marine, California Highway Patrol are now investigating a pedestrian accident involving an adult and child in Borrego Springs.

It happened Tuesday evening. Details of the accident are unclear, however officials say the victims were on foot when they were struck by a car. The victims were flown to area hospitals with injuries. The driver of the car allegedly stayed at the scene until officers arrived.

Pedestrian accidents killed more than 4-thousand people each year, and injure 70-thousand more. Unfortunately, research conducted on hospital records shows that only a fraction of pedestrian accidents that cause injury are reported to police.

An elderly couple was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver Sunday north of Valley Center.

Police say the driver, 20-year-old Earl Smith Jr., was driving on Old Castle Road near Mauka Driver early Sunday morning when his car drifted right into the elderly pedestrians. Authorities say the couple – a 79-year-old man and a 78-year-old woman – had been walking with their backs to traffic at the time. Both died at the scene.

A woman has been charged with vehicular manslaughter after allegedly hitting a nanny who was pushing a baby stroller in a pedestrian crosswalk.

It happened in early February in Torry Highlands.

Authorities have also charged the driver for failing to stop at a red light, and failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

The accident happened at the intersection of Camino del Sur and Via Verrazzano, killing one adult and severely injuring a toddler.
