Avoiding San Diego Car Accidents in 2014

Did you know that in more than 90% of San Diego car accidents are the result of human error? Sure, there is no such thing as a “perfect” driver – but let’s face it, every one of us could improve at least one aspect of their driving. Observation, anticipation, less distraction, or just learning the rules of the road – all can reduce the risk of becoming yet another roadway statistics in 2014.

As one of the areas most experienced car accident lawyers, I know that roughly 10 million people are involved in car accidents each year. According to the CDC, auto accidents are also the leading cause of death for teenagers. There is simply no denying that car accidents are responsible for needless injury, death, and grief every single year.

Speeding a Major Factor

The NHTSA reports speed is involved in about one out of three fatal crashes. Furthermore, the NHTSA estimates that the annual economic cost to society of speeding-related crashes is $40.4 billion.

In 2011 alone, speeding was a contributing factor in 30% of all fatal crashes, and 9,944 lives were lost in speeding-related crashes.

Distracted Driving a Cause for Concern

Distracted driving – such as cell phone use – is an activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the road. All distractions endanger driver, passenger, bystander, and potentially pedestrian safety.

In 2011, 3,331 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver, compared to 3,267 in 2010. An additional, 387,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver in 2011, compared to 416,000 people injured in 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

As a personal injury attorney who’s seen far too many injuries and deaths in San Diego due to negligent driving, I urge you to keep your eyes on the road and the distractions out of the driver’s seat to help ensure safer travels through 2014
