The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department has launched an internal investigation following a pedestrian accident involving a deputy and a woman on a mobility scooter.
According to officials, Deputy Khristina Gimeno was driving the patrol car last Friday morning when it struck the scooter in an Encanto crosswalk. A nearby surveillance camera reportedly captured the accident.
The woman on the scooter was injured and complained of hip and neck pain. Officials believe she has just finished grocery shopping at a nearby store just before the accident.
A witness told NBC 7 the pedestrian crossing signal was illuminated and the woman in the scooter had the right of way. Gimeno reportedly told investigators she never saw the pedestrian in the crosswalk until right before she hit her. Officials said Gimeno hit the brakes as the vehicle and the scooter made contact. San Diego police say Deputy Gimeno was at fault but she will not face criminal charges.
